CWA Theme for 2004-2005

"Putting Our Best Foot Forward"
Duties of Pomona Chairman
1. Attend a regional conference with State Committee.
2. Make a short report about the committee work at each regular Pomona meeting.
3. Promote all contests and projects of the department.
4. Keep Subordinate Granges informed of our program and visit the Granges in the Pomona as often as possible.
5. Assist the State Committee when asked (example: Provide gift for the special table fundraiser at the Connecticut Agricultural Fair.)
6. Send annual report to the State Director before September 15, 2004.
Duties of Subordinate Chairman
1. Report at each regular meeting (short, but informative.)
2. Explain and promote all department contests and projects.
3. Put on a program (or part of a program) for the Lecturer pertaining to our work.
4. Cooperate with other departments, encourage your Grange to contribute to the monetary donations of the department and do some small thing to enhance your hall or meeting place.
5. Send copies of the annual report sheet to your Pomona Chairman AND State Director before September 1, 2004.
A chart will be given to each Junior Grange, Pomona Committee and Subordinate Committee as their guide for the year. An AWARD OF EXCELLENCE will be given to each group meeting the requirements listed. Please join with us for a year of fun as we PUT OR BEST FOOT FORWARD!
2004 CONTESTS IN REVIEW
New England Grange Needlework Contest:

Open to the Public
No Product requirement

There are ten classes for competition - - afghans, doilies, embroidery, baby set, plastic canvas, counted cross stitch, adult garment, latch hook, quilted wall hanging and stuffed toy.

ALL FIRST PLACE STATE WINNERS WILL COMPETE IN THE NEW ENGLAND FINALS.
THERE IS NO LONGER A SEPARATE STUFFED TOY CONTEST. TOYS ARE ONE OF THE CATEGORIES IN THE NEEDLEWORK CONTEST. WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO MAKE EXTRA TOYS FOR “LOVING” WHICH MAY BE GIVEN TO THE STATE COMMITTEE IN JULY OR DISTRIBUTED IN YOUR OWN AREA.

Brochures/entry forms for the New England Grange Needlework Contest may be obtained from the State W.A. Committee, Pomona or Subordinate chairmen.
CONNECTICUT STATE GRANGE CRAFT CONTEST:

Open ONLY to Grange Members and Children and Grandchildren of Grange members. All items become the property of the State Committee and will be used in various ways to promote our work and will be given to the salesroom in the Grange Building at the BIG E.

CRAFT CONTEST: Make something which pertains to ANY character in a children’s story, childhood friend, character from television or movies such as Sesame Street, Disney, etc.

NEW ENGLAND GRANGE BAKING CONTEST:

Open to Grange members - adult class only. (see Junior section for special Junior Baking Contest.)

The baking contest will be held among the six New England States and is sponsored by KING ARTHUR FLOUR. The company has furnished the required recipe and copies may be obtained from any CWA person … State, Pomona or Subordinate. It is a CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE
Judging for the baking contest is held in the Subordinate Grange with the winner baking again for State Judging. STATE WINNER MUST bake again for the New England finals. If the first place winner cannot bake again, the second place winner will be given the opportunity to represent us in the New England finals.
ALL STATE JUDGING WILL TAKE PLACE AT THE CONNECTICUT AGRICULTURAL FAIR ON FRIDAY, JULY 23, 2004. Items must be at the Fairgrounds in Goshen by 8 P.M., Thursday evening.

PRIZES FOR THE NEEDLEWORK, CRAFT AND BAKING CONTESTS AT THE STATE LEVEL WILL BE: 1st place - $15.00, 2nd place, $10.00 and 3rd place, $5.00. An award of $1.00 will be given to anyone earning an honorable mention ribbon. State ribbons will be given in all contests.

Foster Families (Project for teenaged foster kids)

ALL MONETARY DONATIONS may be combined in one check with notations as to disbursements and made out to CONNECTICUT STATE GRANGE and sent to the State Secretary, 769 Hebron Ave., P.O. Box 6517, Glastonbury, CT 06033.


HANAHOE MEMORIAL CHILDREN’S CLINIC:

The Hanahoe Children’s Clinic in Danbury provides services to children (up to twelve) whose parents can afford little or nothing for medical care. We ask you to help us provide funds, clothing, supplies, etc. for these little ones. A list of the items needed by the clinic may be obtained from your W.A. chairperson at each level of the Grange.


OUR WORK WITH FOSTER FAMILIES:

Our project with Foster Families this year will be aimed at teen-aged Foster children. We ask for monetary donations to help provide class rings, class books, and things needed for graduation time for those whose Foster parents cannot afford these “extras.”

Memory Books (directions in the 2002 Blue Book) are still needed as are the “use once” cameras to go with the memory books or for the special events in the lives of the older children.


HELPING HANDS:

This has been a standard project for our Grange people for many years. All kinds of items are made for hospitals, convalescent homes, children’s homes, and for the salesroom at the Big E. Patterns for items may be obtained from any W.A. person.


JUNIOR PROGRAM:

Nifty Needles is a special project we offer to Juniors. This year the contestants may make a Christmas item using ANY KIND OF NEEDLE, knitting, sewing, crochet hook, etc. All entries may be sent to the Connecticut Agricultural Fair for judging.

Baking Contest for Juniors will be to make a Peanut Blossoms. Recipe will be furnished … along with instructions for entering.

Prizes at the state level for the Nifty Needles and Baking Contests for Juniors will be 1st - $15.00, 2nd - $10.00, 3rd - $5.00.

We ask the Juniors to contribute to our State projects especially aid to the Hanahoe Children’s Clinic.
