Foster Care Program

The project for Foster Families for 2008 to repeat any of the projects selected as the most popular of past years. We are calling it “A Symphony of Selections.”

You may make (or purchase) any of the following:

  • Comfy Covers
  • Memory Books
  • Gift Cards for Kids
  • Christmas Stockings

You may do any of the above or a combination of them. You are NOT expected to do all of them. You may select the things you would like to make from the items that have been popular in the past.

CHRISTMAS STOCKINGS may be handmade (knitted, crocheted, embroidered, felt applique, quilted, etc.) or they may be purchased. Small items to fill the stockings will be needed… such as toys, games, writing supplies, jewelry, hair bows, puzzles, etc. Candy canes are acceptable, but NO OTHER FOODS, PLEASE.

Please pin a note on each stocking to tell if it is for a boy or a girl… and the ages (example: Boy age 4-6).

MEMORY BOOKS are always appreciated, as are the “use once” cameras to go with the memory books or for the special events in the lives of the older children.

Memory Book Instructions …

Many children in Foster Care never have an opportunity to save mementos of their lives. We hope that by providing these Memory Books, they will have a place to put pictures, special awards and other “important things” for safe keeping.

Materials Needed
Any 3 ring binder (used ones are often available from businesses, etc. Soft covers may be used by reinforcing inside with cardboard).
Fiberfill batting cut to size of open binder
Approximately 3/4 yard fabric
Fabric glue or glue gun
Popsicle stick
Trims as desired

Procedure
• Place open binder on batting. Cut batting the size of the binder.
• Squiggle glue on outside of binder and press batting in place.
• Cut a piece of fabric 1 inch larger (all around) than binder.
• Lay binder on wrong side of fabric. Clip fabric at each side of metal piece at top and bottom of binder for ease of pushing fabric under.
• Put glue under the top and bottom of metal part of binder. Using Popsicle stick, push fabric under metal part.
• Run a bead of glue around the inside edge of the binder. Fold fabric over and secure in place, using popsicle stick. (Hold lengthwise and draw over fabric to smooth.)
• Fold corners and fasten with a spot of glue.

To Finish Inside
• Cut a piece of fabric 1 inch larger than 1/2 of the binder (all around). This can be of contrasting fabric or the same as the outside.
• Fold under on 3 sides.
• Run a bead of glue under the metal edge of binder. Push fabric under with Popsicle stick.
• Run a bead of glue around the inside edge on 3 sides and secure folded edge of fabric in place. Repeat above for remaining side. (Lace or ruffle trim may be inserted and glued in before securing the folded edge on the inside).
• Decorate outside, if desired, with trims, buttons, etc.
• Insert some type of scrapbook pages. (4 or 5 are enough).
Distribution

These may be donated within each Subordinate Grange's community or given to any State CWA member for distribution. We hope to present some of these Memory Books to the Foster Family Representative during State Session.

Your Foster Care Memory Books are much loved and needed!

Karen Annis, Foster Care Liaison

First, I want to thank every Grange that donated money or items to the Foster Care program last year and every Granger that suggested doing so at a meeting. As you know the monetary donations will continue through the next year. Additionally, the CWA and Junior Committees will have their own special projects on behalf of Foster children that I’m sure you’ll be hearing more about. Please be generous as you can. Perhaps you can designate a country store’s earnings for the Foster Care project.

I am making a special plea to all of you wonderful, creative memory book makers. The memory books are a large hit among foster children. Memory Books, as many of you know, are scrapbooks of children’s lives. They contain photos, information about medical history and the child’s birth family, and other treasured items that the child can take with him/her when moving. They are also a valuable tool for workers to help get kids talking about their experiences and past trauma. Although it is not part of the “official” Foster Care project for this year, there is a desperate need for more of them. If any of you can offer your time and talent, I would greatly appreciate it. The best part? No need to store the books until next year’s State Session. Simply find me or contact me and I’ll come and get the books from you. If you can make some memory books, don’t forget to include it on your Grange’s Community Service report. Thank you!!!
