  OCTOBER 8, 2010 --

The Working Lands Alliance and the CT Trustees of the Eastern States Exposition are pleased to announce the winners of the 2010 Farmland Preservation Pathfinder Awards.  The Pathfinder Awards are designed to recognize individuals and groups that have significantly advanced farmland preservation through leadership, advocacy, planning, and education.

For the extraordinary effort to protect farmland and open space by a relatively small town (4,100 residents), including an approved bonding resolution of $4 million for land preservation and a one-time preservation of 17 parcels totaling over 700 acres in 2009 (unprecedented in the State of Connecticut), the Town of Pomfret is the winner of the 2010 Pathfinder Group Award foroutstanding achievement by a public, private, or non-profit entity in advancing farmland preservation in the State of Connecticut.

For her many years of service promoting local agriculture on her WNPR radio show  and chairing the Celebration of Connecticut Farms fundraiser event for Connecticut Farmland Trust, Faith Middleton is the winner of the Pathfinder Individual Award for outstanding achievement in advancing farmland preservation in the State of Connecticut.

For their determination and success in restoring an agricultural asset to their community and founding a community farm that features educational programs about farming, raises vegetables for a CSA, and makes weekly donations of product to local families in need, the Woodbridge Conservation Commission & the Board of Directors of Massaro Community Farm is the winner of the Pathfinder Education Leader Award for significant contributions in the area of educating the public about the importance of farmland preservation.

The 2010 Pathfinder Winners will be honored at the Working Lands Alliance Annual Meeting & Luncheon on November 17th, 2010.  The event will be held at the State Captiol in Hartford, in the Old Judiciary Room, 12:00 - 1:45.  Cost: $10 at the door.  RSVP to jmartin@farmland.org
