| DECEMBER 8, 2010 -- Governor M. Jodi Rell announced on December 2nd that $150,000 for a new barn at “Second Chance” farm, the state-run rehabilitation facility for abused and neglected horses and other livestock is expected to be approved when the state Bond Commission meets December 10. Built in 2003 on the grounds of the Gates Correctional Facility in East Lyme, “Second Chance” provides special care for abused animals. Inmates from the prison, under the supervision of state agriculture officials, help nurse the animals back to health until they can be auctioned to good homes. Proceeds from the auction are put back into the program. “Everyone needs a ‘second chance’ and this program is a wonderful example of the good work that can be done when our hearts and intentions are in the right place,” Governor Rell said. “The animals, maybe some for the first time, are treated kindly and inmates have a chance to learn skills and lessons in humanity that come from helping these animals.” Officials with the state Department of Agriculture (DOA) say approximately 175 horses and mules have been rehabilitated at “Second Chance.” The farm has also taken in poultry, goats, cattle and a llama over the years. Materials for the original construction were donated by the state Department of Transportation (DOT) and the barn was erected with assistance of Department of Correction (DOC) and DOA.
