| FEBRUARY 11, 2011 -- On January 19, 2011, Congressperson Joe Courtney, 2nd District, announced that he will serve on the House Agriculture Committee. Courtney will be serving on two subcommittees, the Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Subcommittee and the General Farm Commodities and Risk Management Subcommittee. These committee assignments will give Courtney a platform to work on issues of grave importance to a variety of farmers and agricultural interests across Connecticut.
This year, the Agriculture Committee will take on sweeping Farm Bill reauthorization, and is a platform from which to address key farming issues in eastern Connecticut, including the flawed milk pricing system. Courtney will also continue to co-chair the Congressional Dairy Farmers Caucus, which he co-founded in 2009.
“With nearly 2,500 farms in eastern Connecticut, agriculture and dairy policies were already front and center for me over the past four years,” Courtney added. “With a platform on the House Agriculture Committee, I will be even better positioned to address the needs of our farmers. As founding co-chairman of the Congressional Dairy Farmers Caucus, I’ve worked tirelessly to prevent further farm foreclosures and advocated for policies that help these small businessmen and women.”
