| JUNE 7, 2011 -- There were plenty of “Mysteries” to be solved at the Connecticut State Grange’s first “Mystery Night” held on Saturday, April 30. Probably the biggest Mystery for Social Chairperson Joanne Cipriano and her committee was where to put everyone! Tickets were sold out well in advance of the evening with sales cut off in early April.
Upon arrival at Cheshire Grange, attendees were given a “Dinner Menu.” This menu listed 14 clues to menu items and fourteen spaces on the opposite side divided into three courses. By successfully decoding the clues, members could design their own menu and the order in which they would eat. Decoding the menu clues incorrectly provided the first surprises of the evening.
Even the utensils were part of the clues. Failure to put a fork, knife or spoon in the first course, would mean eating without their help during the first or second courses. Brother Phil Prelli got all three utensils in the first course but only had two items left, resulting in an appetizer of three green olives and a cup of coffee.
Special guests dressed as “Little Red Riding Hood” and “Dick Tracy” were featured along with door prizes of Lottery tickets and a raffle drawing. The evening wrapped up with 18 members presenting a play entitled “The Missing Emeralds” that featured many memorable performances by Grange thespians.
It was a fun evening for everyone in attendance and a great start for the Social Committee’s activity schedule.
Next up will be the Pomona Competitive Night to be held at the Prospect Senior Center on Saturday, September 17. A potluck will be held at 6 PM followed by the competition at 7 P.M. Each Pomona is encouraged to put together a five member team to compete in five categories: Sports, Grange, Music, Cooking and Luck. Hope to see you there!
