$89K in aid for Eastern CT growers

By Hartford Business Journal (7/12/11)

  JULY 18, 2011 --

A pair of federal grants totaling $89,320 will finance marketing and export of eastern Connecticut farm products, authorities say.

The first grant for $39,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture will help the Connecticut Department of Agriculture and the Connecticut District Export Council develop a coordinated export marketing strategy, said Congressman Joe Courtney, who says he wrote a letter supporting the grant.

The second grant for $50,320 will also help eastern Connecticut farmers expand their markets.

The funding will be used to improve the Buy CT Grown program, which helps connect Connecticut farmers to a broader network of consumers. The funding will foster sales of local agricultural products to wholesale buyers such as chefs and food service operators.
