Conn. ag officials measuring Irene's impact

By AP via Chron.com (8/29/11)

  AUGUST 29, 2011 --

Connecticut's agriculture commissioner says the state is assessing the damage from Tropical Storm Irene but that the good news so far is the storm could have been worse.

Commissioner Steven Reviczky (re-'VISS-key) says farm buildings had some light damage such as roofs blown off.

He says high winds damaged the state's sweet corn and other row crops. And farmers are concerned about possible flooding if the Connecticut and Farmington rivers flood in the next few days.

One piece of good news is that orchard owners reported few apples blown to the ground.

Reviczky says several goats, pigs and chickens died in flooding in New Hartford, but emergency workers were able to help other animals flee to higher ground.
