Remembering Ethel Erickson of Westbrook Grange

Ethel (Trerice) Erickson, 94, of Westbrook, loving mother, devoted grandmother, and great grandmother, died April 20 at Apple Rehab. She was the wife of 60 years to the late Charles T. Erickson, who predeceased her on Nov. 16, 2001. She was born in Wethersfield, on Feb. 4, 1917, daughter of the late Robert and Alice (Loveland) Trerice. Ethel had lived in Wethersfield and Hartford prior to moving to Westbrook in 1920. A graduate of Old Saybrook High School’s class of 1935, she had worked in Hartford at Traveler’s Insurance Company and Connecticut General until 1953, returning to Westbrook, where she was employed as a secretary to the Board of Selectmen. She also did clerical work for many various boards. In 1968, Ethel was elected Town Clerk of Westbrook, retiring in 1982. 

Ethel had been a member of The Westbrook Congregational Church since 1932. She was also a member of Westbrook Grange, Westbrook Historical Society, and Friends of the Library. In addition, she was a former member of The Soroptomist Club and the Women’s Club of Westbrook, and she served as secretary for Westbrook Council of Beaches. 

She is survived by her daughter, Nancy A. Fanslau of Westbrook; her brother, Edward C. Trerice of Westbrook, and a sister-in-law, Marie Trerice of Wolcott. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Michele Fitterman and her husband, Brian of Westbrook and Lisa Vitale of Del Rey, Florida; two great-grandchildren, Eric and Jack Knudsen of Westbrook, whom she adored; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Robert J. Trerice, formerly of Wolcott and Grace T. Otrin, formerly of Old Saybrook. 

Family and friends are invited to meet and attend a memorial service, officiated by The Rev. John Wilson, on Wednesday, April 27, at the First Congregational Church of Westbrook at 11 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Westbrook Congregational Church, 1166 Boston Post Rd., Westbrook, CT 06498.
