| NOVEMBER 10, 2011 -- A Special Time in Our History - When going through some of Marion Beecher’s papers, we found this article she had written telling in verse about the three Juvenile Deputies who came up with the idea of a Juvenile Grange camp. They approached State Master Ira Wilcox, with their plan and the rest is history. We want to share with you what Marion had written.
Three little maids in Grange were we -
Each one of us known as a Deputy -
Heads altogether, we said with one mind
“We want a Camp of the Juvenile kind!”
We approached the State Master - knocked on his door
Just remember, my friends, this was in days of yore -
The State Master ruled- his word was it,
No fooling around - not the least bit!
State Master Wilcox, dedicated and stern,
Looked at us carefully, each one in turn,
Then said, “I see no reason not to say Yes.
You may have your Camp, good idea, I guess.
BUT
You’ll earn the money, you’ll pay the bills,
You’ll rent the campground over in the hills
And if it succeeds with left over money
The State Grange gets it, just like honey.”
And they did!
Grangers sold aprons and dishes, towels and candy,
Anything salable - it went just dandy
Instead of “hello” they’d “want to buy” -
You could tell it just by the look in the eye
Camp Berger resulted fifty years ago plus,
May it continue without any fuss.
Started by three little maids in Grange,
Whose ideas had a very long range.
