Applications accepted for Conservation Stewardship Program

By New London Day (12/22/11)

  JANUARY 1, 2012 --

The U.S. Department of Agriculture-Natural Resources Conservation Service is accepting applications for the Conservation Stewardship Program, which assists landowners in improving soil and water quality, wildlife habitat and conservation activities that address the effects of climate change.

“CSP is one of our most popular conservation programs, and we expect to receive many applications,” Connecticut NRCS State Conservationist Jay Mar said in a news release. “I encourage all farmers who are interested in applying to contact their local NRCS office as soon as possible.”

The ranking period cutoff date is Jan. 13. Applications should be submitted to local NRCS offices.

A self-screening checklist is available to help potential applicants determine if the program is suitable for their operation. It is available from local NRCS offices or at: www.nrcs.usda.gov/wps/portal/nrcs/main/national/programs/financial/csp.

As part of the application process, candidates will work with NRCS field personnel to complete the resource inventory using a conservation measurement tool that determines the conservation performance for existing and new conservation activities. The applicant’s conservation performance will be used to determine eligibility, ranking, and payments.

For information, call the Norwich USDA field office at (860) 887-3604.
