Stafford Grange News for March

Jackie Granata, Master Gardener from Stafford, gave a riveting presentation on foraging for wild edibles. Granata brought an abundance of samples and literature and explained the health benefits and preparation of numerous wild plants.  For example, native white pine needles are full of vitamin C.  They can be steeped in vinegar to use in salad dressings.  Violet leaves and blossoms could be added to salads as well (also rich in vitamin C), as could red clover flowers (high in protein).  Granata recommended adding one wild edible at a time to one’s diet, to see if any adverse reactions occur.  My personal favorite was the sassafras tea (tasted like Fruit Loops!)

In December the Grange welcomed the Stafford Middle School Snowflakes for an evening of caroling and cookies.  The 5 lady instrumental ensemble, led by Stafford Music Teacher Magda Widomski, performed about a dozen Christmas classics.  Following the performance, State Master Noel Miller presented Milo Bradway with a pin for his 70 years of Grange Membership.  It was a lovely ceremony for a lovely man.

We’ll be on the lookout for Leprechauns at our annual Corned Beef Pot Luck supper on St. Patrick’s Day. . .if we can find them under all this snow!
