Membership News: 5 Keys to Asking Someone to Join

By Jody & Jodi Ann Cameron, CT State Grange Membership Co-Directors

  OCTOBER 1, 2026 --

Here are 5 key components to asking someone to join your Grange:

  1. Start with a personal connection: Tell them why you thought of them. People are more likely to join when they feel personally invited and valued.
  2. Explain what the Grange does: Share your mission and the difference your Grange makes through community service, events, advocacy, youth programs, and fellowship.
  3. Focus on what matters to them: Ask about their interests— community involvement, leader- ship, volunteering, family activities, agriculture, or meeting new people—and connect those interests to the Grange.
  4. Share your personal “why” Explain why you are a member and what you enjoy or have gained from being part of the Grange. Personal stories are powerful!
  5. Make a clear invitation: Don’t just say, “You should join sometime.” Be direct: “We’d love to have you as a member. Would you consider joining us?” Then explain the next step and offer to help them through the process.

The biggest thing to keep in mind is people join people before they join organizations. A warm, personal invitation can make all the difference.
