Camp Berger to participate in Grange Fair

By Caitlyn Reynolds (Winsted Journal 7/27/07)

  JULY 27, 2007 --

Camp Berger staff and Winchester Grange members are preparing for this year's Winchester Grange Fair and Flea Market on Saturday, Aug. 11, at the Winchester Grange Hall and on the Green in Winchester Center.

As always, the fair will include homemade baked goods, games, arts and crafts, raffle items and an assortment of household items for sale. The event will help raise money for Camp Berger, which is now in its 52nd year of operation.

"Camp is such an amazing place. We want it to stay open so everyone can benefit from it," said Stephanie Currie, senior counselor at the camp. "I've been here for five years and I really love this place."

Currie said staffers are enthusiastic about this year's fair and flea market. "We'll have journals, cookies, cakes and pies, keychains and camp items like sweatshirts and bracelets. We'll also have photos and art made by the Camp Berger staff and campers. We're here to make a difference."

The Fair and Flea Market is open to the public and will include multiple displays and exhibits. In the end, camp staffers hope to raise enough money to continue supporting outdoor programs for children.

"We're a lost art, as far as summer camps go," said Kimberly Haber, four-year staff member at Camp Berger. "Most camps cater to specific sports or activities, while Berger offers a traditional family-oriented sort of small town experience. All the counselors here know all the campers, and while our enrollment has gone down, our goal has always been to give each camper the best experience possible."
