Enfield puts Grange building up for sale

By Marcus Hatfield, Journal Inquirer (2/17/11)

  FEBRUARY 20, 2011 --

The town is looking for buyers for the former Enfield Grange building, which the town took over last summer.

Grange officials turned over the building, which is at 2 Broad Brook Road, in August because they had been unable to pay taxes on the building after it lost its nonprofit status in 2007.

Assistant Town Manager Daniel Vindigni said prospective buyers must make a commitment to restore and preserve the exterior of the 1850 building, which was the former Old Scitico Schoolhouse.

He also said buyers could either buy the building and the land or buy the building by itself and move it to a separate location.
According to the town’s notice seeking proposals, the town may be willing to convey the building and property at no cost depending on the “nature of the proposal received.”

The town might also offer the building at no cost to those who would move it if they accepted the full cost and responsibility to completely remove the structure within a timeframe set forth in their proposal.

Vindigni said because of the age of the building and its long history of use, the building will need some work. Interested parties should call Vindigni at 860-253-6351 to schedule an appointment to inspect the building.

The deadline for proposals is March 16 at 10 a.m. Vindigni said that the town has set no bid minimum, but that the town does reserve the right to reject any proposals.

Each proposal should include a development plan that includes the type of proposed use, the intended user, and the project approach and timetable.

Anyone may submit a proposal, but the town encourages Enfield-based nonprofit organizations to submit proposals, the notice said.

The Enfield Grange had used the building as its meeting hall since 1965. The group lost its nonprofit status after failing to host a fair every year, a requirement set forth in its charter.
