Winchester Grange January News Update

By Todd Gelineau

  JANUARY 6, 2012 --

A truly warm welcome awaits all who visit Winchester Grange!  In early November we learned that our boiler (original to this building in 1952) was leaking and needed immediate replacement.  Unfortunately we did not have the money to replace it and no one could know that November would be one of the warmest in recent memory.  Thanks to the State Grange, a loan was secured and a new boiler is installed and once again keeping the hall warm.  Hopefully the new equipment will result in some savings in fuel efficiency, but the new loan will require a lot more fundraising to keep up with our expenses.  You can look forward to many announcements regarding fundraising events during the new year!

Winchester is also looking to reactivate the Junior Grange.  We hope to include as many children from Granges throughout the Pomona as possible and make it more of a Pomona-wide Junior Grange.  Please let us know if you know of any children who can benefit from Junior Grange membership.

We were thrilled in November to learn that two of our own baking winners won honors at the annual meeting of the Association of Connecticut Fairs.  Our adult winner, Henry Borovy of Torrington placed first in the state and our Junior winner, Domenic Lascari of New Hartford placed second.  Congratulations to both of them!

As this issue was going to press, we learned of the passing of Mario (Noni) Fassio, husband of our Lecturer Ramona and father of Terri Fassio, member of Winchester Grange and State Public Relations Co-Director.  While not a member of the Grange, he always supported our activities and donated many of his paintings for fundraisers throughout the years both at Winchester and the New England Grange Building at the Big E.  Our condolences go to Sisters Ramona and Terri on their loss.
