Around The Grange
Do You Remember: Hannah Williams

By Betty Jane Gardiner

  FEBRUARY 15, 2012 --

For many years Wapping Grange and East Central Pomona were privileged to have a hard working member - a Grange sister of many talents!  Her name was Hannah Williams and she was mother of a lady you know as Edith Schoell, Secretary of the Connecticut State Grange.  Hannah excelled in all kinds of things.  She knew Grange work inside and out and did not have appreciation for anyone who didn’t know and perform the work properly.  She was Master and Secretary of her Grange but gave most of her time to the Subordinate and Pomona as Lecturer or Women’s Activities chairman.

Her programs were enjoyed by her people.  Her needles were very active.  She crocheted and did beautiful embroidery- talents she passed on to her daughter.  Among her hobbies were crafts of all kinds.  Hannah had very large hands and fingers, yet she turned out the most beautiful, delicate beadwork you could ever imagine!

There was a time when she made so many complicated necklaces and earrings you’d think she was in the jewelry business and everyone marveled at it all.

Hannah served as Chaplain on Edith’s Installation Team and kept the ladies outfitted with beads to match the gowns they sewed under the direction of Hannah and Edie.

No one will ever forget Cupie Dolls Hannah made by the dozens.  They always made a hit.

Needle-to-say she was a good cook at home and in the Grange kitchen as well.  She always made good coffee.  One night it was a little different!!!  Do you suppose that was the time when they went to wash out the coffee pot and found a potholder in the bottom????

Do remember Hannah.
