Southington Grange May News Update

By Patty Boissonneault

  MAY 2, 2012 --

Southington Grange continues to welcome new members.  Our newest member is captain of the Knights of Columbus Relay for Life team in Southington.  He has invited the Grange members to partner with their team at the Relay, Friday and Saturday, June 8th and 9th.  Grange members will take shifts walking with the Knights team, as well as helping out at their booth.  Members will also purchase luminaria to honor those affected by cancer.

The Grange has recently joined the Village of Plantsville network.  This group ties together merchants and businesses in the Village of Plantsville, who host such events as a June strawberry festival on the ground of the Plantsville Congregational Church, Halloween Festival in the Village for children, and Christmas in the Village for families.  The network of members stretches far beyond the location of the Grange Hall, but Grange members are excited about having a presence among Village businesses to give back to the community and promote itself.

Southington’s biggest fundraiser, their Pasta Supper, will be held on Saturday, May 5th, 5:30 to 7:30 pm.  Buffet menu includes pasta, meatballs, salad, bread and butter, dessert and coffee.  Tickets are $7.00, by calling 860.276.3370.  Proceeds to benefit the Grange scholarship fund.

Break out your sharpest chapeaux for all to see at the first Hats and High Tea event, to be held at the Southington Grange #25 in Southington, Thursday, May 10th from 5:30-7:30 pm.  Mothers, daughters, and grandmothers are encouraged to show and share a memory about their favorite hats, whether precious and  vintage or outlandishly contemporary.   Barnes Museum curator Marie Secondo will present some of the Barnes family’s favorite, historical hats from a collection of over 200, dating from the 1850s to the 1960s.  Tea, coffee,  sandwiches and sweets, will be served.  There is a charge to attend.  Non-perishable food donations are gladly welcome.   Mother’s Day plants will be available for purchase.   Reservations are required.Call (860) 276-3370 or (860) 793-2765. Grange is located at 137 Knowles Ave., corner of Summit St.

Plans are in the works for a bigger and more exciting Harvest Fair.  Southington is in touch with new vendors who are anxious to promote their CT grown products.  Fair date is Saturday, August 18th.
