Old Lyme Grange inspires Historical Book

By Catherine C., The New London Day (11/27/12)

  DECEMBER 2, 2012 --

The Charm of the Place: Old Lyme in the 1920’s is the most recent of a series of interesting books that have been published by the Old Lyme Historical Society. All are available for holiday purchasing at www.oldlymehistoricalsociety.org and a number of venues in Old Lyme.

For an organization that was founded fairly recently, in 2005, the Old Lyme Historical Society boasts an impressive list of publications. The “2013 Now & Then, Old Lyme Community Calendar” is the latest addition, in what is hoped will be an annual tradition. The calendar juxtaposes wonderful historical photographs from the archives with contemporary ones of the same scene, one for each month that is sponsored by a community organization. This year ‘s sponsors are Center School PTO, Coffee’s Country Market, Cooley Gallery, Florence Griswold Museum, Lyme Art Association, Lymes’ Youth Service Bureau, The Nearly New Shop, Old Lyme Marketplace, The Old Lyme-Phoebe Griffin Noyes Library, Old Lyme Town Hall, Sound View Beach Association, and The Village Shops.

The Charm of the Place: Old Lyme in the 1920’s, is the most recent book published by the Old Lyme Historical Society. Inspired by a remarkable 1929 advertising mural found in the Old Lyme Grange Hall in 2007 and written by journalist and Old Lyme native Carolyn Wakeman, Ph.D, this book explores the town’s social, economic and architectural landscape in the 1920s and the changes that took place as electricity, indoor plumbing, automobiles and paved roads were introduced. This delightful book, designed by James Meehan and edited by Alison Mitchell, is lavishly illustrated with prints of paintings, photographs, postcards, programs, and maps. It is the 6th book of a series devoted to recording the early histories of Old Lyme. Other books published by the Old Lyme Historical Society include Poverty Island, This Ancient and Interesting Town, The Hurricane of 1938, The Land Savers, and Rum Runners, Governors, Beachcombers, & Socialists. The Old Lyme Historical Society also recently published limited edition reproductions of a fascinating historic map of Old Lyme.

The “2013 Now & Then, Old Lyme Community Calendar” and all of the Old Lyme Historical Society’s publications are available through their web site www.oldlymehistoricalsociety.org, at the Florence Griswold Museum Shop, the Old Lyme – Phoebe Griffin Noyes Library, Bowerbird, Cooley Gallery, or Lemon ‘N Lyme. If you would like to support the continuing efforts of the Old Lyme Historical Society to collect, preserve, and interpret the rich history of Old Lyme, consider purchasing a membership, also available at www.oldlymehistoricalsociety.org. The organization also welcomes volunteers; explore opportunities to become involved on the Old Lyme-Lyme Volunteer Connection http://volunteer.truist.com/ollvolunteer/volunteer/.
