Ekonk Community Grange September News Update

By Sue Gray

  SEPTEMBER 2, 2013 --

Congratulations to our newest youth member, Matt Maher; Matt joined Aug. 5th & is entering in our Fair!  Clifford Gervais introduced him to the Grange!  Aug. 5th was our Youth Night and wow: we had TWENTY youth in attendance!  Mike Molodich led young and young at heart in a variety of fun activities.  We heard about Clifford & Trevor’s fascinating trip to Elk River, Minnesota and they shared their scrapbook of pictures etc.  We honored deceased astronaut, Neil Armstrong, whose birthday was August  5th also.

Link Cooper was given a round of applause for his extraordinary service to the Grange; hall improvements, lawn care and much more!

The roof came off of our Pavilion and Chris Sebastian reported this project will be completed before the end of August!  Thanks to Trevor Gervais for cleaning and repainting the two Grange picnic tables.

This year, we sent two teams to Washington County Fair to assist Richmond Grange in their “shaved steak” booth.  Thanks to Link Cooper, David & Sue Griffiths; Jim & Verna Cole; Janet Hawkins and Deborah Sharpe for working Wednesday and Betsy and Katie Molodich; Robin & Sarah Cousens & Nate; Katie Boswell for serving as the Sat. night shift.  Jody, Jodi Ann and Jaimie Cameron and Shelley Racine worked Friday night in the Washington County Pomona Grange booth!  Grangers helping Grangers!

We were well represented at the CT/RI picnic at Washington County Fairgrounds.

Thanks to Mike Molodich for organizing a fun Mystery Ride/picnic; haven’t done that for years!  We ended up at Hopeville Pond State Park and all enjoyed hiking, good food and fellowship and were visited by some pesky mosquitoes!

Our August Fair was a huge success! Adding duct tape and lego stations were great additions!  Link Cooper and Sue Griffiths get A+ for their outstanding efforts; Rebecca Gervais led Juniors in providing a free Moon Bounce, the Bike Rodeo and “Dave The Animal Man”, who brought a myriad of animals for “hands on” fun!  Special guests travelling 420 miles to attend included Dennis and Joan Phelps, their daughter Amanda & her husband, Todd and their daughters Morgan and Kaiden!  The “Civil War Encampment” proved another great addition!

With new Fair officers came new ideas and new ideas are the materials with which progress is made!

Clifford Gervais selected quotes from the First Degree as his theme for the coming years programs.  Each meeting we will learn more about this degree as well as have fun!   Jody Cameron will lead in conferral of the First Degree this fall.  It should be another exciting year!

We now have an air conditioner in the kitchen; doorknobs that are compliant; a dehumidifier; a grab bar outside the kitchen door; the center island cabinets have been repaired AND we have new, safer exit steps outside our emergency door:  way to go Link! Thanks to Marion Emmons for her continued financial assistance with projects!  Marion and her sister, Ruth Rosebrooks, each received their 70 year membership awards at a luncheon and Mason Gray his 25 year.

The annual scholarship, presented by Deborah Sharpe, was awarded to Megan DeRouin.

25 year certificates were delivered to Bev Pepin, Cindy Henry and Mandy Dubay and a 55 to Bruce Lindberg.

Katie Molodich will end her term as President at our Oct. installation and has certainly done an exemplary job!  We expect Link Cooper to be a great leader too!
