Ekonk Community Grange October News Update

By Sue Gray

  OCTOBER 4, 2013 --

The program theme for this year will be “The First Degree-In the beginning”.  Our Grange served 50+ hungry kids & parents on the second Sterling, “Farm to Table” tour!

It is amazing how many different types of farms there are in Sterling.  This time they visited the Jordan Sawmill; Hopps’ Alpaca Farm and the Horse Farm on Gibson Hill Road.  Invitations have already been extended (by farmers) for future tours!  Link Cooper provided a list of hall improvements completed during the past year: was it impressive (compliant latchsets to kitchen air conditioner (22 improvements total)!

We are assisting Sterling in “Terracycling” (plastic tubs & lids) - all monies earned go towards community service.  We had 17 members volunteer at Washington County Fair (RI)-a GREAT time was had by all!  Then-on to Brooklyn Fair-where numerous Grangers diligently work each day!  Several from Ekonk also volunteered at the Quinebaug Pomona booth.  Youth Night was outstanding fun!  We also heard about the Kelley Farm adventures of two of the Gervais brothers!  We have State Session delegates:  Link Cooper and Paulette Craig will be our delegates to State Grange.  Link will be installed as President by the time that you read this column.  Many of our Grangers were involved in the planning and success of the annual Sterling Family Day-led by Mike Molodich!

We hosted Pomona the first Sat. in September and will again in December for the annual Christmas party.  Oct. 12th will be our annual Roast Beef Supper to benefit the Veterans Home in Jewett City (TALVHI-The American Legion Veterans Housing Inc.) A great meal for a greater cause!  Halloween Family Fun will begin at 6pm Oct. 25th at our hall with fun activities for Junior Grangers and younger...Around 7pm, Mike Molodich will arrive with his tractor and wagon(s) and then the REAL fun begins--shrieks and squeals of fear/delight will abound as Mike drives through fields/woods amid scary characters/scenes!  Lots of great fun for all, followed by hot chocolate, cider and lots of great food back at the Grange hall!  Visit us anytime-you are guaranteed a warm welcome!
