Around The Grange
October News from Killingly Grange

By John Bennett

  October 3, 2016 --

Mark your calendars!  The 3rd Annual BIG-little Apple Festival will take place on Saturday October 8th, from 9:00 am-4:00 pm (rain or shine) at the Killingly Grange #112 in Dayville. A Walktober 2016 event, the festival will once again feature live entertainment- The Frost Brothers- who will inspire and enliven us with their performance of early rock, folk and classic country tunes by the likes of musical icons Johnny Cash and Van Morrison.

An outgrowth of other annual events at the Killingly Grange, the festival represents something truly fresh and unique when it comes to enjoying the October splendor of The Last Green Valley. Our theme is the celebration of everything that comprises of Autumn and the apple harvest. The festival has a season of its very own.

An Apple Pancake Breakfast will be served all day. The tickets for the breakfast are $5.00 in advance, if purchased from Grange members, or $6.00 at the door- children 12 or younger are $4.00. (The purchase of a breakfast ticket gives each patron a chance of taking home a door prize. There will also be an extensive basket raffle. The drawing for the raffle and door prizes will begin promptly at 3:30 pm).

Other apple – based culinary delights include apple sauerkraut hot dogs, apple pies and fritters, apple cider donuts, and candy apples. And please don’t walk on by our little farmers’ market either! Cider; eating apples; pumpkins; chrysanthemums; apple jellies, butters and sauces; or pickles and relishes will all be available. Maple Leaf Farms of Canterbury will be back selling their delectable maple syrup and candy produced at their state of the art sugar house, which is a destination in itself.

The Salon de MacIntosh Art Show will include a display of paintings, prints and quilts. An antique cider press and kitchen utensil exhibit will give us all a glimpse of the practical aspects of Yankee ingenuity and hospitality in the country farmhouse of long ago; and you can peruse all the unique knitted items, soaps and primitive folk art offerings of artisans as you plan your upcoming holiday celebrations. Children may participate in some old-fashioned lawn games and a donut eating contest.

All across New England, Autumn is a time of reflection on favorite family remembrances like pumpkin carving or smelling your grandmother’s apple pie just as its coming out of the oven. Please join us, as we listen to some great toe-tapping music or watch re-enactor/craftsmen practice their trade. Come and visit our little jewel of a festival in Connecticut’s Quiet Corner-just sit back and let someone else do the cooking! And if you enjoy yourself at the festival, be sure to come back and check out one of our blue grass concerts (the first one of the season will be held on Saturday, October 22nd).
