We start this column with a thank you to a friend of Winchester Grange. For many years (at least 20), Mr. John Dwan, owner of Winsted Super Saver has generously supplied the Strawberries for our Strawberry Festival on credit until after our Festival was held. All we had to do was stop in or give him a call and we would be certain the berries would arrive at his store two days before Father’s day, ready for hulling. Even before he handled the strawberries for Winchester, he worked with Marion Beecher to supply much of the food used in the old Mountain County Food Booth at the Connecticut Agricultural Fair at very affordable prices. Early this spring it was announced that Mr. Dwan would be retiring and closing his store in Winsted. He greatly deserves the rest and we wish him well in his retirement. We have a relationship with a different hometown grocer and the festival will go on this year without a hitch.

All of this leads perfectly into a pitch for our June 18 Strawberry Festival at the Grange Hall in Winchester Center beginning at 2:30. We serve the area’s largest servings of Strawberry Shortcake with freshly baked biscuits and just-in-time fresh whipped cream. Dine-in or take-out. Join us for a Winchester Center tradition!
