CT sites among 400 People's Gardens in US

By Hartford Courant / Associated Press (7/3/10)

  JULY 8, 2010 --

Federal officials say "People's Gardens" have now opened in every state, including two in Connecticut.

U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says more than 400 of the gardens have opened nationwide since his agency broke ground on the first one last year at its Washington headquarters.

The gardens are intended to provide communities with food and leisure space. The collaborations between volunteers and organizations include sustainable gardening activities, such as composting or collecting rainwater in barrels.

Connecticut's gardens are at the Tolland County Agricultural Center in Vernon and an "outdoor classroom" at the Western Connecticut Academy of International Studies Elementary Magnet School in Danbury.
